    Description

A nice portable pendulum style apothecary scale in brass from before 1920. This is an old photographic or chemical scale. It was specially designed for photographers, whom in those days, processed their photos themselves and needed to weigh out exact quantities of chemicals. This specimen was bought in the US. The maker most probably is Ph.J. Maul from Hamburg, Germany. This scale is known as the
    apothecary scale
. The chart of 12 Drachms is subdivided into parts of a third Drachm. The Drachm, also spelled Drachme, is a British and American apothecary unit of measuring weights. 1 Drachm = 60/7000 pound = 3 scruples = 60 grains =
    3.888 grams.
With the original round glass tray (diameter 2-1/2 inches) it stands about 5 1/2 inches high. It is in working
order and the cardboard box is believed to be the original box.
